Joe Conway was a Union Convenor at Westland and remembers Gala Day

Every year, Westland held a gala day on the airfield at Westland factory site. Thousands of workers attended with their families and it was a great day out for everyone

Westlands used to hold a Gala Day and there was always departmental skittles, cricket, football, everything. Tug-of-War. On Gala Day the finals of all that was played off on the football pitch. And, on the airfield over there they would have stalls really, you know. It was always June, always seemed to be a sunny day. The Club stayed open all day. We had a massive new Sports Club, which was built to a classic design; a wonderful place and really luxurious, lots and lots of money invested in it. You know, the whole town came on Gala Day and stayed until about 8 o’clock at night from 11 in the morning. Everywhere was packed, everywhere.

It was a great Company to work for then

It was really great times you know. I was always involved in the cricket, football, skittles, even the tug-of-war and that so we always had a great time. I remember those days, you know, before the real crisis in ’85. It was really happy times working there. It was a great Company to work for then.
